Letter From the Dean of the Morsani College of Medicine, Fall 2017
Share |

Dear Alumni:

This August, we welcomed our newest group of future physicians at the Morsani College of Medicine at the Class of 2021 White Coat Ceremony in downtown Tampa. The students were welcomed by family, friends, alumni and fellow USF Health personnel as they received their first white coats. I’m thrilled to announce that this year we raised over $106,000 – quadrupling total giving since the White Coat Campaign’s inception in 2012. Many of the donors were faculty, staff and alumni of the medical college.

This year’s hurricane season greatly impacted our state and nation. My heartfelt thoughts are with the families of those who have lost lives and those adversely affected by the natural disasters in Texas, Florida, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico, Mississippi and Alabama. I am truly proud of the outpouring of support from USF and USF Health faculty, staff, resident/fellow and student volunteers before, during, and after Hurricane Irma.

Under the guidance and leadership of President Genshaft, we sent 12 USF Health physicians to Puerto Rico who were well-prepared to participate in international disaster relief. I'd especially like to thank Dr. Asa Oxner, a 2011 alumna of the Morsani College of Medicine, Dr. Elimarys Perez-Colon, and Don Mullins for handling the travel logistics for our doctors headed to the San Juan Bautista Medical Center. You can make a contribution via the USF Herd Funder in support of Puerto Rico here. Your gift will help USF Health purchase and transport supplies and equipment to Puerto Rico, as well as cover the travel expenses of USF faculty, staff, medical residents and students involved in the recovery effort.

I would also like to congratulate Dr. Paul Kuo, who was selected as the new chair of the Department of Surgery. He will also fill the university’s Richard G. Connar Endowed Chair in Surgery.

Finally, last month we announced the official launch of construction for Water Street Tampa and would like to extend an invitation to be a part of an exclusive alumni opportunity to leave your legacy on the new medical college through the Legacy Commons project. To learn how you can participate, please contact Kara Steiner at ksteiner@health.usf.edu or call 813-974-3023.
