Dear Fellow Alumni,

Our Alumni Society has been busy with several exciting projects and activities:

We hope you received our Bulletin print alumni newsletter in the mail in August. If you didn’t, we may not have your updated address information. Please email medicinealum@health.usf.edu and we’ll be sure to update our records. You can access a copy of this publication online by clicking here.

In August, we welcomed our newest group of future physicians at the Morsani College of Medicine. I was joined by several Medicine Alumni Society Board members at the Tampa Museum of Art where we met this tremendously talented group of students at a student welcome reception. At the Class of 2021 White Coat Ceremony in September, they received their very first white coat. Thank you to all our alumni, faculty and friends who sponsored white coats for this next generation of physicians.  I had the pleasure of giving the keynote address at the event. Click to read more about the ceremony.

Regrettably, in the wake of Hurricane Irma in early September, we were forced to cancel this year’s Medicine Alumni Reunion Weekend. We are truly grateful for the support and understanding demonstrated by our alumni.  We look forward to our biggest alumni Reunion yet! On October 5 & 6, 2018 we will celebrate both this year’s and next year’s milestone anniversaries! Mark your calendars!

This October, we recognized Brian Williams MD ’01, recipient of the USF Alumni Association Distinguished Alumnus Award. Dr. Williams entered into the national spotlight in July 2016 after a Dallas sniper shot 12 police officers and two civilians during an anti-police brutality protest. Dr. Williams was the lead trauma surgeon on call at Parkland Memorial Hospital, which was the treatment site for seven of the wounded officers. To read more about him, click here to see his interview with Dallas NPR. To view his interview with Valerie Riddle MD ’89, click here.

You won’t want to miss our first ever Fall Alumni Lecture on November 16, which will be followed by a Q&A session and reception. We will be featuring Dr. Dominic D'Agostino who will be presenting: "Emerging Applications for Nutritional Ketosis" and Dr. David Diamond who will be presenting: "A Rigorous Assessment of the Putative Role of Cholesterol in Causing Cardiovascular Disease." These topics highlight simple dietary changes as metabolic therapies with great impact on most western degenerative diseases. Click here for more information and to watch interviews with both speakers.

The plans for the new medical college in Water Street Tampa are moving forward as scheduled.  Medicine alumni have an exclusive opportunity to leave their mark on the college by participating in the Legacy Commons project. For information on the project, contact Kara Steiner at kstiener@health.usf.edu or 813-974-3023.

We plan on introducing more exciting events and activities in the next few months.

Best regards,
