Share |

On February 3, 2017, the MCOM Alumni Society hosted the Third Annual Alumni-Student Meet and Greet. Eleven alumni volunteers, representing a variety of specialties, visited their alma mater and gathered in the Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) Auditorium to spend time with our medical students. They openly shared their knowledge and experiences with our students as they work towards their careers in medicine.

We are grateful to the following alumni that participated as panelists during this event.

• Elizabeth Sagatys, MD ’03 Hematopathologist and Chair of the MCOM Alumni Society’s Alumni & Student Programming Committee moderated the panel discussion.  That included:

• Brett Bolhofner, MD ’80 Orthopaedic Surgery

• Sion “Bill” Carter, MD ’87 Radiology and Chair of the MCOM Alumni Society

• Glenn Catalano, MD ’88 - Psychiatry

• Wilson “Jason” Cornett, MD ’98 Pediatrics

• Daniel Heinig, MD ’84 Internal Medicine

• Joseph Pecoraro, MD ’84 General and Vascular Surgery

• Chris Pittman, MD ’88 Interventional Radiology & Venous and Lymphatic Medicine

• Dan Riggs, MD ’81 Pediatrics

Deborah Trehy, MD ’78retired Obstetrician-Gynecologist who volunteers at the BRIDGE Clinic

Kira Zwygart, MD ’98Family Medicine & Associate Dean of Student Affairs

More than 40 students attended this informational networking opportunity which gave them the chance to meet and ask questions of the alumni. They asked alumni about how they selected their specialties, how to be prepared for a career in medicine, how to balance work and life issues, obstacles they had to overcome, why they got involved in the Alumni Society and more.

The alumni were able to share their expertise, advice and experiences.

Some comments included:

·         The future of medicine is exciting – the world will change you have to change with it.

·         Have a thirst for knowledge, continue learning, stay informed

·         Be able to collaborate across disciplines - seek help from colleagues – never believe you know it all

·         Enjoy the Humanity of Medicine - “Be with the patient” - treat them like family.

Many alumni have maintained contact with the students, invited them for shadowing and mentoring opportunities and offered to continue conversations with them throughout their journey towards becoming physicians.

Want to get involved?

As alumni, you can inspire, teach, mentor and give these students the opportunity to make a connection with someone that has successfully achieved the dream they have for themselves. We look forward to hosting more events like this in the future.
