To: All USF Health

From: Stephen Klasko, MD, MBA

Vice President for USF Health

Dean, College of Medicine

Congratulations to USF Health students who have created the first ever USF student-directed clinic, in the university area center on 22nd St in Tampa. Some 30 students have been planning the new Bridge Healthcare Clinic, which plans to open later this summer. It's an important step for collaboration among students and for learning how community needs can be met.

For more details, here's the report from the students:

Dear USF Colleagues,

On behalf of all the USF COM, DPT, and Social Workstudents working hard on the new student run free clinic, we are happy to write this message to give an update on our progress and an introduction to those not yet familiar with the project.

We have recently chosen the name of "BRIDGE Healthcare Clinic." Vision: The vision of the founders is to create a collaborative venue of learning and serving that all students within the USF Health and Social Work colleges can enjoy.

USF Health students are currently in the heart of the planning stages with resources to open one of the best and most encompassing student run clinics in the country. We are in a unique university setting to have the cooperation offour health colleges and a college of social work to make up nearly all aspects of clinic involvement and design a student couldwish for.

Nine monthsago, planning and designs for a USF Student Run/Initiated Free community clinic began. Our clinic isbased on very successful models around the country whose directors and facultywe metat a National Conference for Student Run Clinics last year in New York City. The clinic is beingorganizedtoencompass all colleges within USF Health and the College of Social Work. All levels of students will directly participate in the care and planning of the patient's health visits. The COM aspectwillimplement a team teaching/care approach consisting of 1st/2nd yr students led by a team leader of a 3rd/4th yr and attending clinician. The clinic is entirely organized by student clinicians with our faculty mentors as support. Students from the various colleges will implement their respective specialties of care and have already begun to organize their student committees and operational plans. Along with primary care the clinic will encompass access to pharmaceuticals, social services, Physical Therapy, health education, health screenings, vaccination events and many other public health and support services. We will be enjoying the facilities of the newest and most up to date Florida Dept of Health UAC Clinic as well as paperless record keeping via Allscripts used by all USF Faculty Clinic Providers and the future Advanced Healthcare Centers.

Approximately 30 students from the COM are involved in the steering committee to lead our clinic in its inaugural year. The steering committee was designed to encompass mostly 1st/2nd year students in order to build a strong base with students who can grow the clinic with the understanding of the original design, mission, and goals.

We are currently being sponsored by USF Health, the Florida Dept of Health,Quest Diagnostics, Allscripts andhave meetings scheduled with USF Specialty Care, MoffittCancer Center and other healthcare entities around Tampa Bay.
